Seeing Signs

Luke 2:8–20

This will be a sign for you: you will find a child wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.

Luke’s angel gives the shepherds a clear sign, a pre-googlemap direction to finding God in a manger. And the sign of God is a child--Jesus.

Finding signs of God is tricky. Where we see signs will depend on who we think God is.

We might think God is a supernatural being who organizes events in the world and in our lives.

If we think we see signs of God in nature, is it only the beautiful butterflies, or can it be a lion chasing, catching and eating a gazelle baby?

Some say God can be found in the human soul and not in animals or nature.

Others prefer an extraordinary God visible in earthquakes or universes.

Is there a correct answer? In the minds of some people, yes, there is a right answer—their answer. However, I’m inclined to believe that there could be any number of answers to the question of where to find God. Perhaps it’s more about what we do with the answer. How do we live with our particular answer?

For instance, if I believe that God is found in the souls of humans, then I need to respect that God essence in all people. To love God I need to love everyone.

Our Advent Exploration questions for today are: Where do you see signs of God? How do those signs shape the way you live?
